Lake Placid came to international fame in both 1932 and 1980 when it hosted the Winter Olympic Games. Since then, the city has been recognized as a playground for recreational enthusiasts. Many attractions relating to the Olympics can be found throughout Lake Placid and the surrounding area, such as the Olympic Center where elite athletes train year-round. Some venues, such as the luge and bobsled runs, are open to the public. The surrounding Adirondack Mountains offer a host of activities including seasonal sports like camping, cycling, hiking and skiing at Whiteface Mountain.
